Sermon Notes

When A Loved One Dies

Introduce the reality of grief through the death of a loved one. Jesus’ example of weeping shows that mourning is faithful and holy. Affirm that “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matt 5:4) and that Christians do not grieve as others who have no hope because of the resurrection. Encourage the congregation to face sorrow (not deny it) and to lean on Christ, “the resurrection and the life,” for hope beyond the grave. This message normalizes deep grief as love’s testimony, and points to our ultimate hope of reunion and resurrection in Christ.
